Bizarre remedies of Ancient times using honey and products of the hive.

Ancient civilizations reveal in many instances their use of honey as medicine. A time gone by when people were in touch with nature and its hidden wisdom . Big pharma didn't exist then. Humans and nature. Nature and humans. There was a time humans were aware they were nature, not above it.

Albeit some of the ancient remedies were a bit bizarre. Yet modern day science has proven honey has many beneficial medicinal qualities: such as excellent anti-bacterial and there is research in MRSA infection, wound and burn treatments. So it makes sense our ancient cultures observed the value bee products had in healing wounds.

How did our ancestors use honey? That varied with the civilization.

Egyptians recorded their medical ideas and archaeologists revealed many strange and unusual examples.

Honey was ground together with a Pig's eye, antimony (Antimony a lustrous gray metalloid, found in nature mainly as the sulfide mineral stibnite. Antimony compounds have been known since ancient times and were powdered for use as medicine and cosmetics, often known by the Arabic name kohl), red ochre then poured into the ear of the man so he may be cured at once while reciting a spell twice.

They would make a poultice of sorts to place on the enlarged gland on the neck and mix honey with acacia fruit, blood of the hwr-bird, fly's blood and northern salt.

For a diseased eye to clear up the pus honey was mixed with balm from mecca gum, ammoniac. Treating the discharge with frankincense, myrrh, yellow ochre.

Treatment of cataracts was a lovely concoction of tortoise brains and honey then placed on the eye with more incantations. These strange and curious rememdies don't stop here but are just as bizarre. I am happy to be living in a more modern world where our scientists have cleared the pigs eyes and fly blood from the remedies.

There are some applications that we still use today such as beeswax being used as the main ingredient in many recipes for the preparation of ointments, creams, salves used to treat burns and wounds and soothe joint pain. Honey itself is used to treat burn patients, healing wounds, moisturizing the skin, propolis and beeswax to seal injury from harmful pathogens while healing.
